About the work
As in many of her works, the reference to art history also runs through the work "Tour de Madame 2". On view is an image, heavily "pixelated" in red tones, showing two men carrying a bier that is covered with a cloth. This motif is found in Nicolas Poussin's painting "The Burial of Phokion" (1648-1650). The use of the signal, symbol and alarm color red, which runs through Koether's works, appears to the viewers like a filter, an involuntarily put on pair of glasses, which clearly shows them that the foreign gaze, the gaze of the artist, always resonates.

Jutta Koether studied philosophy and art education at the University of Cologne. From 1981 to 1992, she was an editor and author for the pop culture magazine Spex, and from 1985 also co-owner. Since 2010 she has been a professor of painting and drawing at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. Previously she lectured at the UdK Berlin, the Royal Academy in Copenhagen, the School of Visual Arts, the Cooper Union School of Art as well as Columbia University in New York. She is still active as a writer for various cultural magazines such as FlashArt.
All this time Jutta Koether worked as a visual artist. Her works cover the genres of painting, performance, music and film, and she also considers her publishing activities as part of her art. Thematically, she deals with pop culture, art and cultural studies, feminism and gender identity issues. Her work is often interpreted as a response to the Cologne art scene of the late 1980s.
