The Viehof Collection brings together various positions of contemporary avant-garde art in a context that is both exciting and contextually rich. Works from the former Speck Collection form the basis of the collection with many important works from the second half of the 20th century including Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Jannis Kounellis, Raymond Pettibond, Sigmar Polke, Thomas Schütte, and Rosemarie Trockel to just name a few.
Equally important, works from the Rheingold collection, added in 2014, build a bridge to contemporary art and enrich the Viehof Collection with important work groups of contemporary painting and drawing, diverse photography portfolios, significant video and multimedia pieces as well as challenging installations. By making targeted acquisitions, the Viehof brothers were able to further concentrate the collection and to give it an unmistakable profile.
As one of the most important private collections of contemporary art in Germany, the Viehof Collection is now composed of over 1000 works of groundbreaking German and international positions including paintings by Georg Baselitz, Peter Doig, Jörg Immendorff, Sigmar Polke, Neo Rauch, objects by James Lee Byrars, Isa Genzken, Danh Vo, Georg Herold, Mario Merz, and photographs by Candida Höfer, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Wolfgang Tillmans, and many others.
In the autumn of 2016 a large comprehensive exhibition of over 560 works by 75 artists was organized by Deichtorhallen Hamburg and accompanied by a catalogue. The exhibition presented the quality of works in the collection to a wide audience.
2018/2019, the Viehof Collection cooperated with Langen Foundation Neuss on a show that presented six artists from the collection whose work had been acquired at an early stage of their career. The exhibition “Polyphon” was not a comprehensive show but a thematic focus, in which artists were encouraged to position themselves towards the collection by showcasing new works.
Part of the Viehof Collection can currently be seen in the exhibition cooperation "Freischwimmer" at the Museum Kurhaus Kleve until the 25.04.2021. Here, two photographic collections closely associated with the Rhineland meet at eye level. The title "Freischwimmer" (Free Swimmer) is taken from a series of works by Wolfgang Tillmans, by whom both collections have works in their collections. This thus forms an excellent common denominator and is intended to indicate the urge for attention that photography has sought for decades within the visual arts and which now finally seems to be adequately rewarded in the public perception.
